Journal Overview

The journal connects observation and analysis of Earth systems with environmental understanding and scientifically grounded approaches to sustainability.

Intended readership: Earth, climate, environmental, ecological, geospatial, sustainability, hazard, and resource researchers.

Aims & Scope

It publishes Earth science, geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrology, atmospheric and climate science, environmental science, and environmental ecology, including processes, change, resources, hazards, biodiversity, and pollution.

Water, soil, waste, remediation, monitoring, remote sensing, GIS, environmental modelling, conservation, ecosystem services, circular economy, environmental management, climate adaptation and mitigation, and human–environment systems are welcome.

Policy-relevant work should remain transparent and evidence-led; advocacy or opinion without a scholarly research basis is outside scope.

Subject Coverage

Use these areas to judge whether the manuscript’s central contribution belongs in this journal.

  • Geology, geochemistry, and geophysics
  • Hydrology and water
  • Atmosphere and climate
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Ecology and conservation
  • Soil, pollution, waste, and remediation
  • Natural hazards
  • Remote sensing and GIS
  • Sustainability and circular economy
  • Climate adaptation and mitigation
  • Ecosystem services
  • Human–environment systems

Methods & Approaches

Methods should suit the research question. These common approaches are illustrative, not artificial requirements.

  • Field sampling and observation
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Remote sensing and GIS
  • Environmental modelling
  • Longitudinal monitoring
  • Spatial analysis
  • Lifecycle assessment

Interdisciplinary interfaces

  • Earth systems with physics and chemistry
  • Environment with technology
  • Ecology and conservation
  • Sustainability with human systems

Scope Boundaries

Editors assess each manuscript as a whole. The following are generally outside scope unless a clear substantive contribution is established:

  • Unsupported political advocacy
  • Work without a material Earth, environmental, or sustainability question
  • Local descriptions without wider scholarly significance

Article Types

Availability is confirmed during submission and may vary. No universal length or item limits are implied.

Original Research Article

A complete original study with methods, evidence, limitations, and discipline-appropriate conclusions.

Review Article

A critical, structured synthesis that advances understanding of a defined topic.

Short Communication / Brief Report

A focused original contribution whose significance can be established concisely.

Methods / Methodology Article

A validated method, workflow, instrument, computational approach, or analytical advance.

Perspective / Commentary

Evidence-informed analysis of a significant development or direction; unsupported opinion is unsuitable.
