Journal Overview

The journal focuses on materials as designed and characterized systems, linking how they are made and structured to how they behave, perform, degrade, and can be recovered.

Intended readership: Materials scientists and researchers at interfaces with chemistry, physics, engineering, energy, computing, and sustainability.

Aims & Scope

The journal publishes materials research establishing relationships among processing, composition, structure, properties, and performance, including synthesis, advanced characterization, modelling, and informatics.

It covers nanomaterials, biomaterials, polymers, ceramics, metals, composites, electronic, magnetic, optical, energy, sustainable, and functional materials; surfaces, interfaces, films, coatings, additive manufacturing, degradation, durability, recycling, and circular materials.

Work should provide sufficient characterization and connect performance to material structure or design rather than present an isolated device or process result.

Subject Coverage

Use these areas to judge whether the manuscript’s central contribution belongs in this journal.

  • Synthesis and processing
  • Structure–property relationships
  • Advanced characterization
  • Nanomaterials and biomaterials
  • Polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites
  • Electronic, magnetic, and optical materials
  • Energy and functional materials
  • Surfaces, films, and coatings
  • Computational materials and informatics
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Degradation, recycling, and circular materials

Methods & Approaches

Methods should suit the research question. These common approaches are illustrative, not artificial requirements.

  • Synthesis and fabrication
  • Microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction
  • Property and performance testing
  • Multiscale modelling
  • Materials informatics
  • Lifecycle and degradation study

Interdisciplinary interfaces

  • Materials chemistry
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Engineering and manufacturing
  • Energy and sustainable materials

Scope Boundaries

Editors assess each manuscript as a whole. The following are generally outside scope unless a clear substantive contribution is established:

  • Synthesis without material-property insight
  • Device engineering in which the material is incidental
  • Characterization catalogues without a clear materials question

Article Types

Availability is confirmed during submission and may vary. No universal length or item limits are implied.

Original Research Article

A complete original study with methods, evidence, limitations, and discipline-appropriate conclusions.

Review Article

A critical, structured synthesis that advances understanding of a defined topic.

Short Communication / Brief Report

A focused original contribution whose significance can be established concisely.

Methods / Methodology Article

A validated method, workflow, instrument, computational approach, or analytical advance.

Perspective / Commentary

Evidence-informed analysis of a significant development or direction; unsupported opinion is unsuitable.
